Rufous-tailed Hummingbird

I saw this hummingbird in the garden, while I was eating outside with my family. It is a Rufous-tailed Hummingbird :


It is similar to the Buff-bellied Hummingbird, but its belly is grey.


Its scientific name is Amazilia tzacatl.

Other names: Ariane à ventre gris (French name).
Habitat: Found in plants that have flowers, and its nest is made in trees, about ten meters above the ground.
Is it found easily? Yes, it is the most common hummingbird in Belize; however, it is rare on high altitudes (like maya mountains), and inside extensively forested areas.
Additional informations: Hummingbirds are very territorial, and they will not hesitate to attack animals of any size, that are too close to their flowers. They can fly in any direction, including backward. There are 22 species recorded in Belize, and maybe other ones to discover. Hummingbirds are from the family of Trochilidae, and exist only in the continent of America; in other continents, there is a family of birds that resemble hummingbirds: Nectariniidae. They are similar to hummingbirds, but are completely different from the real trochilidae. They are called Sunbirds.
